As career fair season approaches, college students everywhere are stricken with nervousness about what to expect at these massive impersonal functions, full of ten-second introductions and snap judgments. So where do we look for answers? Our friends, family, and campus career counselors may all chime in with advice of their own, but we at Majoring in Careers have decided to go to the source. Think of everything you have done in your whole life. Okay, time’s up. Now think of all the unique experiences and abilities you gained from each of those events that contributed positively to who you are today. Now, describe precisely why each of those experiences and abilities happen to make you the most qualified person my corporation could hire for the specific position we have open. Alright, so we’ve discussed how to get started with your resume. What are some other options when creating your resume? After reading Purple Cow by Seth Godin, it got me thinking that a lot of what he has to say can be applied to every part of your life. For those that have not read the book, the general gist is you want to be remarkable and set yourself apart from the crowd - “Cows, after you’ve seen one, or two, or ten, are boring. A Purple Cow, though…now that would be something.” Assuming you are a remarkable candidate for the position that you’re applying for, some of the next couple ideas can be of benefit when designing your resume. Each one should be taken in stride and used to get your brain working as to how you can make your resume stand out against the other candidates. (more…)
