You get more comfortable talking to people, especially ones that might interview you. Talking to the recruiters will help you relax when you end up interviewing.
You can get interviews! Most of the time companies will just tell you to apply online, but a lot of companies also set up on-campus interviews. You won’t have a convenient opportunity for interviewing if you don’t make it to the career fair
You see a wide variety of companies and what they can offer you. Half the battle in finding a job is picking a company that you works for you. At the career fair you can discuss more specific topics of the position including: location and responsibilities.
Some recruiters give commentary on your resume. This can be helpful to know what might be looked at during the interview or what other similar employers are interested in.
You get to ask the best way to follow up with them might be. I have gotten emails and business cards of real people to follow up with, not just HR.
You might make a great impression. I did this once just be giving the “firmest handshake of the day”. This led to immediate interest and a job interview.
A lot of companies will be there, you will talk to some that you never thought of getting jobs with. I had no idea that my summer internship would work out, but in talking it over at the career fair, I found out that the company was hiring in the area I wanted to be.
The resumes you give out do go somewhere. Whether it is a trash bin or filing cabinet, someone will get to see it along the way.
You may run into recruiters you met before, which will be a great way to follow up. Even if you don’t recognize any, you’ll end up getting some (cool?) free stuff when talking to them.
You don’t have a good enough excuse not to go. If you really think about it, a career fair could be the most important step in your life. You never know what will happen, you might as well just go.
